Talking About: Arctic chill in South; record snow in East – Weather- msnbc.com

Arctic chill in South; record snow in East – Weather- msnbc.com

From the above article here are some snippets worth considering:

  • COLUMBIA, S.C. – Subfreezing temperatures across the South have Florida farmers worried that strawberry, tomato and other crops could be destroyed, with temperatures in even usually balmy Miami only in the 50s on Tuesday…
  • "The problem now is that we have a weeklong freeze predicted," said Ted Campbell, executive director for the Florida Strawberry Growers Association. "It’s an endurance test."…
  • Forecasters say the Southern deep freeze will last through the weekend, likely breaking records for continuous cold temperatures in many parts of Florida and elsewhere…
  • The eastern U.S. was not only dealing with subfreezing temperatures, but parts of New England were under record snowfall. In Burlington, a storm dumped more than 33 inches, breaking a single-storm record of nearly 30 inches set in 1969…
  • In Miami, the game-time temperature for the Orange Bowl between Georgia Tech and Iowa was 49 degrees, which FOX-TV announcers said was a record for the annual college football game, which started in 1935…
  • The weather caused hundreds of school closings and delays in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, the North Carolina mountains and elsewhere…
  • "Yes, Lord, it has been cold," said the 55-year-old, who has been homeless on and off for the past 25 years. "It got so cold last night, I thought about sleeping in a trash can."…

When reading anything these days you have to have what my Chief Petty Officer in the Navy would call “the critical eye”.  We, as a nation, need to stop being passive consumers and absorbers of the news and become engaged in the discussions and ask ourselves what and why the news outlets are reporting and demand they have some accountability for the content they select and push out to us.  Take the above for example.  What do you see?  The East and South of the country seem to be in trouble, dealing with record temperature lows, snow falls, and durations of freezing not seen on 40 to 60 years!  We even have the human element where they interviewed a homeless man to get the social blight angle covered.  Isn’t this the same MSNBC that was wall to wall plastering pro global climate change coverage just a month ago stating how we had wrecked the environment and touting that this last year was the warmest in 10 years contradicting a 9 year annual decline of global temperatures?  Well, yes it is, but the above is not the only thing MSNBC is doing:

Seoul battles heaviest snow in 70 years: Winter storm dumps more than 10 inches on South Korean capital

  • SEOUL, South Korea – Seoul residents battled the heaviest snowfall in modern Korean history after a winter storm dumped more than 10 inches Monday, forcing airports to cancel flights and paralyzing traffic in South Korea’s bustling capital…
  • Gimpo International Airport in western Seoul canceled 224 flights before resuming service Monday afternoon, airport official Choi Choon-ja said…
  • About 3,600 workers were mobilized to clear the snow from Seoul’s roads and sidewalks. About 5,000 soldiers also were dispatched to Seoul and surrounding Gyeonggi Province, according to the Defense Ministry…
  • Beijing also was digging out Monday from a weekend winter storm.  More than 3 inches of snow accumulated in the city center Sunday, according to China’s National Meteorological Center. State media called it the highest snowfall in the capital in a single day in January since 1951. Upward of 8 inches was recorded in the suburbs of Changping near the Great Wall of China.
  • Primary and middle schools were closed in Beijing and the nearby port of Tianjin, and with snow plows in short supply, more than 300,000 people were assigned to clear snow in the capital with shovels, scrapers and brooms.
  • The snow didn’t stop 50-year-old Park Hee-soon from her job delivering milk and yogurt to homes and offices in western Seoul. However, Park — trudging through the streets in her regular yellow uniform — said the snow and ice were dangerous.  "I slipped on streets several times today, and my back hurts because of that," she said…

Not finished just yet, so earlier this week MSNBC was railing on about the grips of the cold and ice gripping north Asia, including snow falls and record lows not seen in 40 to 50 years.  They did fail to mention one significant fact, just 2 years earlier 50 and 60 year records were broken with record snow and cold in China and Korea at that time, killing hundreds and causing massive crises requiring the full mobilization of of the PLA and a great stumble to the PRC at the beginning of their auspicious year of 2008. Of course outlining the trend of 2 50 year record snows and cold events in less then 5 years occurring paints a different picture.  But we aren’t done just yet!

‘Icebox’ cold in eastern U.S. — even Florida:`Weeklong freeze expected in Florida, ‘endurance test’ for crops

  • The deep freeze will last for at least the rest of the week. The National Weather Service said the mercury could fall below zero in St. Louis later this week for the first time since 1999…
  • In Oakland, Md., about 1,400 homes lost power with temperatures near zero. Many people shivered through the night until crews using torches could thaw frozen switching equipment, Allegheny Power spokesman Todd Myers said…
  • …places like Birmingham, Ala., and Charlotte, N.C., will see temperatures above freezing for just a couple of hours a day all week long. Many Southern homes aren’t built to handle that type of cold, with uninsulated pipes and heat pumps that will have to run all the time just to keep things barely comfortable…
  • The phones were already ringing off the hook Monday at an agency in Greenville, S.C., that uses federal grants to help people with their heating bills.  "I’m very worried, especially for those who are not accustomed to seeking assistance," said program coordinator Betty Cox…

Snow, ice sweep Britain, disrupting transport: Truck collision kills driver as schools shut and planes are grounded

  • LONDON – Hundreds of schools were shut, travelers faced air, rail and road delays, and even venerable soap opera "Coronation Street" was disrupted Tuesday as snow and icy weather swept Britain…
  • This winter has been the coldest for years, driving a surge in demand for heating fuel. Authorities on Monday urged power suppliers to switch temporarily from gas to other fuels such as coal. The measure, known as a gas balancing alert, has only been used once before, in March 2006.  (Ok I have to step in here, do you see this and understand it?  This is showing a 2 time occurrence in 5 years of drastic cold temperatures using extreme methods only done one time before AND it is suggesting using the ire of environmentalists world wide, COAL?  Unfortunately this is it, MSNBC saying nothing further on the subject)
  • Weather service the Met Office said snow would reach as far south as London, with unusually cold weather expected to continue for the next two weeks. The office said Britain was experiencing its longest cold snap since 1981…

Filming at the Manchester studios of "Coronation Street" — a popular TV soap about a working-class community in northwest England — was suspended after cast and crew members were kept away by the snow…

Just a month earlier the theme of green and environmentalism was all the rage on this supposed news outlet.  They had twice daily reports from Copenhagen going on and on about the consequences and failing to credit or even acknowledge those of us to disagree with the science that has been discovered to be in question and all we want is open and accountable scientists who can pass a legitimate peer review, reproduce and have others reproduce their experiments to validate their numbers and climate models, and finally to explain their subversion, greed, and religion like fervor over something they had to change mid stream after 20 years of warming stopped by 9 years of cooling and ignored with just 1 year of warming again.  Now, just a month later we are being buried in a blizzard of “global cooling” reporting (pun on purpose) showing that every continent is gripped now in 50 year low of temperatures and that supersedes the 50 year breaking of lows just 3 to 5 years prior!

This is the reason I stopped reading mainstream news, the contradicting and utter lack of message or their ulterior motives thinly disguised as passing along of information.  Take the above.  Despite the highlights of record lows, travel disruptions, etc. it is easy to see what the slant of the reporters is.  They only talk to certain people.  Why not talk to the school administrators to see how the snow and cold days will be made up, the factory owners who will lose filling orders due to lack of labor, transportation delays, etc., the municipalities who have to deal with lower employees, higher demands, and emergency conditions the strain puts on the dangerously low budgets due to dwindling tax revenue?  Sure, we can all relate to sleeping in trash cans, delivering yogurt, and answering phone calls from hysterical citizens.

All of these articles lack the one thing that triggered my near dormant recent presence online activities.  The lack is tying this event to the plight of global climate change.  I want to see how our emissions of carbon, which were blamed for warming the planet, are now responsible for its opposite condition, global cooling.  I want to see how the science backs this trend, as we have just been notified that St Louis is seeing below 0 temps for the first time since 1999, 65 year lows in Miami, frozen Midwestern students trying to escape the snow by going to Florida only to find temps below 50, or China, Korea, and the UK all seeing year after year breaking of 30 to 50 year record lows and durations of low temperatures.  Its not that I am stating I am closed to discussions or explanations on cause and effect on this, I am but I am skeptical when for 20 years I was told one thing only to see the past 10 years have resulted in just the opposite direction.  Pollution is a problem and a real problem we have to confront and resolve now.  We need to address our environmental impacts of deforestation, over consumption, air and water pollution, not wasting time, money, efforts, and future advancements on some shifting ideology that is shroud in mystery and secrecy on seeming contradictions on face value.

So reading the above and knowing the coverage of Copenhagen you need to ask yourself, why the stark contrast in story lines and why not continue the hard line push on the side of climate change.  Maybe that is why the belief in human influenced climate change dropped from 40% to 30% in just 10 years, we can look outside and see what is actually going on around us.  The purpose of the mainstream news is to inform us of events and bring forth stories that are important and vital to our society.  Agenda driven journalism, in my opinion, is the main motivating factor for the drastic decline in confidence and subscriptions to newspapers and magazines.  People can now get different views, for free, any time they want via the internet.  I only subscribe to 1 magazine now, Car and Driver, when in high school I read 10 to 12 magazines a month, mostly current event ones, now they are all the same and preach the same liberal slant.  So I thought I would just share the tid bits above and contrast that against the very same outlets goings on and on and on and on about shrinking ice caps, raising sea levels, disappearing polar bears, droughts, and its being caused by human existence.  We are all carbon based life forms on this planet.  Its time we stopped listening to those driving agendas and opened our eyes and ears and make our on conclusions based on our own abilities to make up our own minds.

MSNBC must be listening, they added a fluff piece http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34735022/ns/weather/ stating that this is "just a blip on an overall warming trend" by one scientist they interviewed. They only science offered was an abstract explaination of how the air flow above the jet stream flows and how it has pushed the jet stream into a temporary unusual pattern, creating record highs in Alaska and Washington state, but not stating the highs, how long the records stood, or for how long, like they do with the lows. They even add in British MPs getting jeered for stating it was cold outside and global warming needed to be looked at more closely, why add that jab? The questions on most of the minds of Americans, Northern Chinese, and Northern Europeans is how much longer this deep freeze, deep snow, and icy conditions will last. At least the water tables will get a boost from the snow melt, of course that could result is massive flooding, mudslides, and other troubles in the spring. Blip of not, this gives anyone with half a brain pause when all they can say is 2009 was the tenth warmes since 1800, I guess 2010 will be the 10th coolest.

One of the things that has changed is how opinion is now being pushed as fact. Arrogance feeds on this, the attitude I am right therefore it is factual, no matter what the facts say. Knowing that so many media outlets are now using opinion as fact creates a whole different view from my perspective.Other thing, as mankind, we are a part of nature and just by our very presence we influence nature as does every other liveing organism, plant and animal. So the question is…. why is our influence bad? Lastly, look at the money trails. i read a post where a member is heavly vested in green technology and if cap and trade goes through he will become super rich an make Gore look like a piker. Also look at the scientists, as they report this stuff they go back to the governments asking for more money to research and what are they invested in?

This was very interesting, if I can find the story that I read earlier today I will post it so that you can read it. Yes how long is this going to last? The weather man said tonight that we will be seeing temps go up into 50\’s 60\’s next week, maybe some rain.
